What goes through a teen’s mind on his first hunt

Ken Christensen, class of 2012, captured the experience of a 15-year-old from Stamford, NY as he went with his father to hunt his very first deer. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s youth hunting day was an effort in 2012 to boost the state’s hunting licenses, whcih the department said had fallen by about one-quarter since peaking in the 1980s.

“I wasn’t raised around guns and I’ve never fired one in my life. So when I read about the initiative, I wondered what might go through the mind of a kid on his first big-game hunt. I didn’t understand how someone could hand a 15-year-old a gun and say, ‘Now go kill something.'”
